On the Activities of the “Tavrychanyn” Newspaper and the Biography of Its Publisher Danylo Kolomiytsev

Abstract
Despite the demonstrative liberalisation of national and cultural life in the Russian Empire after the revolution of 1905, the Ukrainian printed word could not acquire the proper rights in full and succumbed to administrative pressure. Not in the least, this was the reason that in historical studies devoted to the ethnic press of the Crimean Peninsula of the first quarter in the 20th century, there is an actual lack of information about regional Ukrainian-language printed publications. In particular, at the beginning of the 20th century, there was an attempt to establish a periodical in Sevastopol, in which articles would be submitted in Ukrainian and russian, but the Minister of Internal Affairs of the Russian Empire rejected the corresponding request. The only Crimean periodical of the 1900s in which thematic section articles in Ukrainian were submitted with varying degrees of success was the newspaper "Tavrychanyn", published in 1905–1914. This periodical positioned itself to be "social, economic, literary, and political," or "non-partisan and progressive" but at the same time it didn’t have a clear programme and also published materials that resulted in accusations of having a "harmful attitude towards the government and the current system". During its existence, the newspaper "Tavrychanyn" experienced several changes in concept, periodization, and names (in particular, in the middle of 1913, two issues were published in Moscow under the name "Rus" and with the subtitle "Former "Tavrychanyn" and at the end of 1917, one number, probably in St. Petersburg, published as a "republican magazine-newspaper" called "Grazhdanin Rossii"), which can be related to worldview, geography, and other changes of the founder and editor of the publication, Danylo Kolomiitsev.The presented study is an attempt to consider comprehensively the available information about the newspaper "Tavrychanyn" as well as the biographical information of Danylo Kolomiitsev, who attempted to break into journalism and literature mostly through scandals and dubious initiatives. The exploration uses information from the Ukrainian press during the relevant time period, archival sources, and biographical data obtained from Danylo Kolomiitsev's heirs.
