Abstract
When the iconic 11 Man's Face" located on the southern flank of Cedar Mountain -in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts opposite Bash Bish Falls gorge-was first discovered is unknown.It is theorized that as the forest became denuded before the last blast of the Copake Iron Works in 1903, the trees obscuring "Profile Rock" were finally removed, revealing the view depicted on this copy of an old postal card.An 1885 report (in Vol.6 of the Journal of the U.S. Association of Charcoal Iron Workers) infers softwood trees such as pine and hemlock still growing on the mountain side represented one third of trees used for producing charcoal.Pine tree tops almost obscuring the view in the 1930's were removed by Mount Washington residents Mervin P. (Merv) Whitbeck and Collins L. (Pete) Miles, to once again reveal nature's masterpiece.This naturally occurring land feature (which is a cultural heritage site) is now unique in New Eng land, since New Hampshire's "Old Man of the Mountain" was destroyed a few years ago by a landslide.
