Quatre grandes problématiques sont rencontrées dans les lacs et rivières du Québec: l'eutrophisation, les fleurs d'eau (cyanobactéries), l'ensablement et l'érosion, et la perte des usages. Face à ces problématiques, le recours à des outils de diagnostic et de suivi de la qualité de l'eau basés sur la mesure de paramètres physico-chimiques, est répandu. Plusieurs techniques permettent la mesure des différentes formes du carbone, de l'azote et du phosphore. Celles-ci ont cependant des limites. Elles sont souvent longues, coûteuse [i.e. coûteuses] et peuvent parfois manquer de pertinence. Différentes applications de la spectrophotométrie UV au diagnostic et au suivi de la qualité des eaux naturelles du Québec sont présentées. Trois modèles de déconvolution ont été créés. Le premier modèle permet l'estimation de la concentration en nitrates et en COT d'une eau. Le second permet l'attribution d'une valeur d'indice d'influence anthropique et la proposition d'une typologie des tributaires basée sur cet indice. Enfin, le troisième modèle permet le calcul rapide du TSI (indice d'état trophique) relatif à la chlorophylle-[alpha] et du TSI global (prenant en compte également la transparence et le phosphore total). Les spectres UV ont également été exploités de façon qualitative afin de caractériser l'évolution spatio-temporelle de la qualité de l'eau. Cette recherche a permis de confirmer la pertinence de la spectrophotométrie UV pour l'estimation du COT et des nitrates (à faibles concentrations) dans des matrices aqueuses riches en substances humiques. Elle s'est également avérée intéressante dans le calcul des TSI et la caractérisation de leur évolution. Cependant, le calcul de l'indice d'influence anthropique devra être amélioré afin d'en augmenter la pertinence.
