Atomic oxygen in the MLT region from WINDII airglow data: Empirical model and interpretation

Abstract
Oxygen green line and hydroxyl nightglow emissions from the Wind Imaging Interferometer (WINDII) have been used to construct a climatology of atomic oxygen near the mesopause as a function of height latitude and local time. This climatology shows there to be strong local time variations in the atomic oxygen mixing ratio as suggested by earlier observations of airglow variability. Comparison with a simple model of the effects of vertical advection on oxygen indicates that most of this variation is due to vertical advection by the diurnal tide. Analysis of temperature data from the extended Canadian Middle Atmosphere model suggests the existence of vertical displacements as large as 4 km above and below the mean. These results indicate that the determination of a background oxygen profile at these heights must be undertaken with care and take these vertical motions into account.
