Les desavinences del catalanisme amb la justícia espanyola, no són una qüestió d’ara, més aviat són un afer recurrent que ve de lluny. Ja el 1911, Prudenci Bertrana fou jutjat i empresonat per haver editat, amb Diego Ruíz, l’opuscle “La locura de Álvarez de Castro”. I encara abans, en el segle XIX, l’any 1886, la publicació d’un article periodístic, en el bisetmanari El Demócrata, provocà que el seu director, Artur Vinardell Roig hagués de respondre davant la justícia de les acusacions d’injúries al rei. El procés arribà al Tribunal Suprem que finalment dictaminà, el 18 de març de 1887, una condemna de 10 anys i un dia de presó major per al periodista republicà. Aquest fet obligà a Vinardell a deixar Girona i establir-se a París, iniciant així un llarg exili que es perllongaria per un període de 38 anys
