Abstract
Con el fin de reforzar el valor educativo, social y cultural, el Parlamento Europeo estableció el año 2004 como 'Año europeo de la educación a través del deporte'. En junio de ese mismo año, dando respuesta a este reto, la Comunidad de Madrid convocó la I Edición de los Campeonatos Escolares. Se trata de una iniciativa conjunta de la Dirección General de Deportes y de la Dirección General de Mejora de la Calidad de Enseñanza. Su principal objetivo es fomentar la práctica deportiva entre los jóvenes estudiantes de los institutos públicos madrileños. Con este programa se pretende además fomentar la convivencia democrática y el respeto a las diferencias individuales. En la VI Edición 2009-2010 los alumnos, cuyas edades están comprendidas entre los 12 y 18 años, han podido elegir entre las siguientes especialidades: ajedrez, bádminton, baloncesto, balonmano, fútbol sala, hockey, judo, taekwondo y voleibol.
