Il sistema degli spazi aperti è ciò che rimane tra le strade e le case, oppure sono i luoghi dove viviamo, oppure è qualcosa che definisce le nostre città e le nostre regioni?Le aree urbane rappresentano sia il confine più estremo della “incompatibilità” tra attività umane e equilibri ambientali, sia la sfida più rappresentativa dell’applicazione di modelli di sviluppo sostenibile. Il libro riunisce una serie di materiali e di esperienze di pianificazione e progettazione degli spazi aperti in alcune aree urbane-metropolitane del British Columbia-Canada e dell'Italia (Vancouver, Victoria e Surrey, Bologna, Roma e Torino, Reggio Emilia, Ferrara ed Empoli) cercando di mettere in evidenza proprio il passaggio dall’idea di sostenibilità all’azione concreta.
