El presente trabajo busca ampliar la noción de ruralidad en Colombia al explorar las relaciones de vecindad, las conexiones y la centralidad de los territorios provinciales rurales en relación con los urbanos. Para ello, se construye el Índice Demográfico de Urbanización Provincial (IDUP), que deriva en tres grupos de provincias: urbanas, intermedias y rurales. Se definen dieciséis categorías de aglomeración-ruralidad con base en el IDUP y en los tiempos de viaje en automóvil por carretera principal hasta las cabeceras mayores de las provincias urbanas e intermedias. Esto permite analizar las características de las provincias de Colombia y evidenciar sus conexiones territoriales, las subredes y sus centralidades.
