Abstract
The concept of competitivenessused in this work, is defined as the result ofor participation in international trade and canbe expressed as the capacity of a country,industry or a segment of a productive chain toconquer, maintain or increase its participationin the national and international market.The hog’s commercial competitiveness ofthe countries that the nafta conforms inthe period 1990 to 2004 was measured withthe following indicators: participation in theinternational markets (pmi), the coefficientof the revealed comparative advantage (vcr),rate of imports penetration (tpi) and theexhibition to the international competition(eci). In Mexico, pmi and vcr grew from0.02 to 0.8% and from 0.2 to 1.9%, due to theincrease of exports, which signifies an increasein competitiveness; in contrast the increasesin tpi and eci raised from 5.8 to 42.6% andfrom 5.8 to 41.2%, respectively, which reflectsthe high dependence of Mexico on hogimports, mainly from the United States. Betterindicators were obtained for the United Statesand Canada.
