Abstract
-- ABSTRACT : This master’s thesis aims to demonstrate that the narrative voices in the short story is able to translate the childhood’s universe with an emotional truth that the novel can’t reach. Primarily, the writing of the short story cycle entitled Chez nous, il fera bleu tries to picture the different facets of childhood by letting it speak, at first, and then by letting it become a source of nostalgia. Secondly, the analysis of the narrative voices in Kiev Renaud’s short story sequence, Je n’ai jamais embrassé Laure, attempts to show how the fragmentation, inherent to this literary genre, depicts the world of childhood with subtlety. The creative writing section contains eighteen short stories and is divided in two parts. The narrator, autodiegetic and intradiegetic, is the same throughout the whole cycle. In the first part, the narrator is about eight years old, has a vivid imagination and tries to compose with a fierce friendship and a relationship filled with love and shame with her father. In the second part, the narrator goes through teenage years and the beginning of adult life. Childhood therefore becomes a place of liberty and wonder where she can escape daily monotony or the fading of her loved ones. The essay refers to Gérard Genette’s and Dorrit Cohn’s concepts in narratology as well as Cristina Minelle’s theory on the short story in Quebec to explore the different representations of childhood in Je n’ai jamais embrassé Laure. The first chapter is interested in the effects of the fragmentation on the narrative voices and studies the ellipsis, the character’s entry in medias res and the narrator’s limited views. The second chapter studies the way that each of the three narrative voices enters childhood. Whether the child is only a character or a narrator, the fragmentation, with everything that it gives to the story, lead to an emotional depth which, in a way, surpasses the novel’s one. -- Mot(s) clé(s) en anglais : Childhood; Narrative voices; Short story; Fragmentation; Interiority; Kiev Renaud.
