ABSTRACT: The Canadian dairy industry produces 1.6 billion liters per year of whey permeates, a liquid waste composed of 5 % lactose. This liquid stream is a source of biomass sugars which can be converted into lactic acid, the monomer of polylactic acid, a biopolymer whose market is growing steadily. A techno-economic analysis carried out in 2021 shows the development potential of a catalytic process for the transformation of monosaccharides from whey permeates, potentially more cost effective than a process typical biotechnology. Almost all of the studies on on the catalysis of biomass sugars into lactic acid have been carried out in batch reactors, reaching around 65 % yields for the most promising heterogeneous catalysts. Hence, to develop a process to convert sugars to lactic acid, there is a need to design a catalyst capable of achieving high lactic acid yields from glucose in a fluidized bed reactor. Hence, the development of a heterogeneous catalyst usable in a continuous reactor, here a fluidized bed reactor, is the next step to achieve the potential of a catalytic process to transform biomass sugars in lactic acid. Previous studies have shown that Lewis acidic functionalized Beta zeolites are the most promising heterogeneous catalyst for such reaction. A two-step synthetic method was developed to obtain functionalized and fluidizable catalysts. First, Beta zeolites are treated with concentrated nitric acid at 100 ◦C for 24 hours to remove the framework aluminum species. Sn or Zn are then grafted to the vacant sites by incipient wetness impregnation, which results in a uniform distribution of metals without the formation of extra-structural metallic species. Zeolites are then included in a synthesis gel containing silica gel beads, an oxide of Al, Sn or Zn, NaOH, alkali salts and TEAOH which serves as the binder during the agglomeration. The gel formed is spray dried, which grafts the zeolites and the metal oxides on the silica beads, resulting in the formation of a catalyst functionalized and fluidizable.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
