This paper focuses on the energy simulations of a net zero energy triplex in Montréal. Simulations are performed using TRNSYS 16. Two sets of results are presented: a base case (R-2000 type triplex) and the current triplex design. The total electrical energy required in the current design (14103 kWh) is about 40 % of the total electrical energy required by the base case (35211 kWh). Net-zero energy consumption is achieved by using 73.2m2 (12.7 kW) of high-efficiency PV modules (η ~ 17.4 % at nominal conditions) inclined at 30º. Approximately 62 % of the energy requirements are for appliances and plug loads. The use of a superior envelope design, high-efficiency ground source heat pumps combined with a free cooling mode lead to relatively low electrical energy requirements for heating (899 kWh) and cooling (100 kWh).
