Crip Time, Castoriadis, and Transcending the Duty to Accommodate in the Workplace

Disabled people often experience time in a manner that is distinct from able-bodied individuals. Disabled people may have shorter careers, have difficulty maintaining full-time employment, and may be forced to work part-time due to the impact of their impairments. Many disabled people face considerable barriers every day in accessing services to participate fully in the workplace, including accessible transportation and attendant services. These underfunded services are often late if delivered at all, wreaking havoc on the ability of workers with disabilities to plan their day and make firm commitments. Yet disability scholars have attempted to reclaim this experience as one that needs to be understood as one with liberating potential. Ellen Samuels and Alison Kafer have identified this phenomenon as “crip time.” In Canadian law, the duty to accommodate workers with disabilities up to the point of undue hardship has not typically engaged with how disabled people experience time differently. We develop a typology of what we call crip time from above to reflect the lived experiences of disabled people, and in particular, their experience of time. In this paper, we report initial findings from a multi-year qualitative research project exploring the relationship between disability accommodations and crip time. Funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) of Canada, we undertook focus group interviews with disabled people to explore their experiences of time, followed by individual interviews. Influenced by the work of radical Greek–French philosopher, Cornelius Castoriadis, we argue that his notion of social imaginary time enriches the existing work of crip time and opens new possibilities to create a philosophy of accommodation that recognizes how disabled bodies experience the workplace. Our initial findings suggest that disabled people experience work differently because of a number of barriers relating to their experience of crip time. We conclude with some policy recommendations. Elles peuvent avoir des carrières plus courtes, éprouver des difficultés à conserver un emploi à temps plein et être forcées de travailler à temps partiel en raison de leur handicap. De nombreuses personnes handicapées se heurtent chaque jour à des obstacles considérables pour accéder aux services dont elles ont besoin pour participer pleinement à la vie active, tels que des moyens de transport accessibles et des services d’accompagnement. Ces services, sous-financés, sont souvent fournis en retard, voire pas du tout, ce qui perturbe considérablement la capacité des travailleurs handicapés à planifier leur journée et à prendre des engagements fermes. Pourtant, les spécialistes du handicap ont tenté de présenter cette expérience comme une réalité qui doit être comprise comme ayant un potentiel de libération. Nous proposons une typologie de ce que nous appelons le crip time afin de refléter les expériences vécues par les personnes handicapées, et en particulier leur expérience du temps. Dans cet article, nous présentons les premiers résultats d’un projet de recherche qualitative mené sur plusieurs années et explorant la relation entre les mesures d’adaptation pour les personnes handicapées et le crip time. Financés par le Conseil de recherches en sciences humaines du Canada (CRSH), nous avons mené des entretiens de groupe avec des personnes handicapées afin d’explorer leur expérience du temps, et ensuite, nous avons mené des entretiens individuels. Influencés par les travaux du philosophe franco–grec radical Cornelius Castoriadis, nous soutenons que sa notion de temps social imaginaire enrichit les travaux existants sur le crip time et ouvre de nouvelles possibilités pour créer une philosophie de l’aménagement qui reconnaît la manière dont les corps handicapés font l’expérience du milieu de travail. Nos premières constatations semblent indiquer que les personnes handicapées vivent le travail différemment en raison d’un certain nombre d’obstacles liés à leur expérience du crip time. Nous concluons par quelques recommandations sur les politiques à adopter.
