Les projets de numérisation des Bibliothèques de l’Université de Montréal ont pour objectifs principaux de préserver à long terme et de diffuser largement des ressources documentaires sélectionnées. Ces projets s’appuient sur des critères distincts de sélection et de priorisation pour optimiser l’utilisation des ressources limitées, maximisant ainsi leur impact. Les critères de sélection consistent en l'alignement stratégique, la demande et l'intérêt, la valeur de la ressource, l'état physique, la valeur ajoutée par la numérisation et le statut légal quant à la diffusion possible. Les critères de priorisation concernent quant à eux les coûts et la faisabilité, les partenariats et les financements possibles, l'évaluation de l'impact attendu ainsi que les considérations légales et éthiques. Une grille pondérée des critères est proposée en annexe pour guider la prise de décision, avec des pondérations initiales pouvant être ajustées par consensus entre les responsables.
