Abstract
Este artigo propõe-se estudar a relação da escritora canadense Nancy Huston com suas duas línguas de escrita: o inglês, língua materna, e o francês, língua de adoção. Com base em uma autodefinição da autora, segundo a qual sua situação entre duas línguas apontaria mais para seu duplo analfabetismo do que para um bilinguismo criativo, este texto analisa as interfaces das duas línguas em diferentes produções literárias da escritora. Trata-se, então, de observar as vicissitudes de sua identidade compósita à luz de uma observação de Salman Rushdie, que, ao analisar o entredois vivido por escritores migrantes, os define como “pessoas traduzidas”. Anne-Rosine Delbart e Michael Oustinoff afirmam que, quando Nancy Huston acolhe a língua inglesa em suas produções em francês, sua obra se desvela como um palimpsesto. Ensaios de Nancy Huston publicados ao longo de uma década revelam suas reflexões sobre o papel e o espaço de cada uma de suas duas línguas, vistas como instrumentos musicais organizados em uma hierarquia precisa.Résumé: Cet article propose une réflexion autour des langues d’écriture de l’écrivaine canadienne Nancy Huston: l’anglais, sa langue maternelle, et le français, sa langue d’adoption. Dans le but d’étudier une curieuse autodéfinition, selon laquelle «loin d’être devenue ‘parfaitement bilingue’, je me sens doublement mi-langue, ce qui n’est pas loin d’être analphabète» (1986: 77), ce texte analyse les interfaces des deux langues dans différentes productions de l’auteure. Il s’agit donc d’examiner les vicissitudes de son identité composite à la lumière d’une remarque de Salman Rushdie, qui, en observant l’entre-deux vécu par des écrivains migrants, les définit comme «hommes traduits». Anne-Rosine Delbart et Michael Oustinoff affirment que, lorsque Nancy Huston accueille la langue anglaise dans ses productions en français, son œuvre se dévoile comme un palimpseste. Des essais de Huston publiés le long de dix ans révèlent ses questionnements sur le rôle et l’espace de chacune de ces langues, vues comme des instruments de musique organisés dans une hiérarchie précise.Mots-clés: Nancy Huston; écriture; bilinguisme.Abstract: This article is about the relation between the Canadian writer Nancy Huston and hers two idioms: English, maternal idiom, and French, an adoption idiom. The text discusses the different use of each idiom, in hers books, and the meanings of what she defines as double illiteracy instead of a creative bilinguism. It is a discussion about identity. Salman Rushdie talks about the migrant writer’s experience of writing in two idioms, by him defined as translated people. Anne-Rosine Delbart and Michael Oustinoff confirm that Nancy Houston uses English even when writes in French, what shows her work as a palimpsest.
