El 18 de enero de 2021 a las 23:46 h (hora local) se produjo un terremoto superficial destructivo en la Precordillera a unos 52 km al suroeste de la ciudad de San Juan, Argentina. Utilizando 46 estaciones sísmicas se determinan parámetros sísmicos para la fuente (hipocentro: 31.850°S, 68.936°O, profundidad 5.6 km; magnitud Mw 6.4; momento sísmico M0=6.06x1018 Nm; intensidad máxima Mercalli Modificada VII en La Rinconada y Carpintería y; mecanismo focal de rumbo con una pequeña componente inversa). Estos resultados y otros preliminares de más de 940 réplicas (420 con magnitud ML ≥ 2.5 en 30 días) acuerdan con la activación de una estructura en el basamento del terreno Cuyania bajo la Precordillera Central y sin evidencia de ruptura superficial cosísmica.
