Le Québec développe actuellement une nouvelle catégorie d’aire protégée dont les objectifs s’apparentent à ceux d’une aire protégée avec utilisation durable des ressources naturelles afin de l’adapter aux réalités des régions. Ces aires protégées « polyvalentes » seraient constituées afin de consolider le réseau d’aires protégées à gestion stricte; elles seraient aménagées de manière à sauvegarder la naturalité des écosystèmes tout en assurant l’utilisation durable des ressources naturelles et le maintien des services écologiques qui contribuent au bien-être des communautés locales et régionales. Ce projet a pour objectif d’évaluer le rôle d’un comité d’experts comme outil d’innovation dans la mise en œuvre d’un projet pilote visant l’expérimentation du concept d’aire protégée polyvalente et de proposer une démarche visant à évaluer l’écart entre la gestion actuellement réalisée dans la réserve faunique de Matane et la gestion de type « aire protégée polyvalente ».
