Antecedentes: las habilidades comunicacionales constituyen un pilar fundamental en la formación profesional de un médico y permiten establecer una buena relación médico paciente indispensable para el diagnóstico y el tratamiento eficaz. \n \n Objetivo: evaluar las habilidades comunicacionales de los internos rotativos de la carrera de medicina que laboran en el Hospital Vicente Corral Moscoso. \n \n Metodología: se trata de un estudio observacional y descriptivo en los estudiantes de último año de la carrera de medicina. Se utilizó la guía Calgary-Cambridge para evaluar las habilidades comunicacionales de los estudiantes. Los datos obtenidos se analizaron con el programa IBM SPSS Statistics 24.0. Para el análisis se utilizaron estadísticos de tendencia central, frecuencia y chi cuadrado con la elaboración de tablas y gráficos. \n \n Resultados: la media de edad fue de 24,04 (± 1,154) años. La mayoría de estudiantes fueron de la Universidad de Cuenca representando el 51%, del total el 20% conocen la guía Calgary-Cambridge, solo 19% cursaron la cátedra optativa de médico paciente. Al evaluar las habilidades comunicacionales se encuentra que: saludan al paciente 90%, demuestran respeto 89%, mientras que solo el 11% resume la entrevista al cerrar la sesión. El puntaje de los estudiantes que se formaron en comunicación médica fue de 13,79 (DS±2,323) mientras que aquellos que no estudiaron relación médico paciente puntuaron 11,60 (DS±3,371) sobre 23. \n \n Conclusiones: existe una deficiencia en el desempeño en habilidades comunicacionales de los internos de la carrera de medicina, uno de los posibles causales parece estar relacionado con dificultades en la enseñanza de comunicación médica
