Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

\n \nSeveral components found in motor vehicles need an antioxidant alloy, this alloy is ferrosilicon (FeSi). FeSi is produced using an electric arc furnace with three anodes allowing it to reach temperatures of over 2000 degrees Celsius. Elkem Metal Canada produces several types of ferrosilicon such as regular FeSi, inoculant FeSi and ferrosiliconmagnesium. According to customers, different FeSi grades like 50% Si, 65% Si and 75% Si are wanted. The main raw materials used in the manufacture of ferrosilicon are quartz, wood chips, coal and scrap metal. To succeed in transforming the raw materials into an alloy, the production uses the principles of electrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy and carboreduction. Once the material has been transformed, the FeSi is drained through a hole located at the bottom of the furnace into tanks on rails. During a long period of ferrosilicon production, it is possible that a surplus of metal will form in the furnace. Indeed, during the transfer of metal in the tanks, it may happen that the metal does not flow and remains in the furnace. The quantities of metal remaining in the furnace enclosure have an impact on the quality and the chemistry of the alloy and can render a production unusable if the current rate of the elements deviates too much from the expected rate. It is impossible to measure the amount of accumulated metal due to the extreme heat, the unevenness of raw materials added, and the constant variation in production recipes. Although certain formulas exist to estimate this quantity, several important parameters are left out by calculating only the rate of silicon entered during the hour preceding a pour and subtracting from it the rate of silicon exited during the pour. This means that the amount of accumulated metal is not correctly approximated. This master’s thesis proposes a new formulation for the calculation of metal accumulation by integrating the rate of iron with the rate of silicon. It also proposes the use of the chemical reaction time of the raw material according to the Si content of the desired product in order to know the total period of raw material to be added as input to the calculation. This master’s thesis shows the different steps to calculate the latency time of the raw material in an industrial environment and FeSi production by identifying the various problems contained in the old metal accumulation calculation at Elkem Metal Canada as well as the solutions to improve his estimate while implementing them. Days when production encountered certain metal accumulations were targeted by Elkem metalworkers. From these days, the old metal accumulation calculation and the new calculation were compared. The results of the new metal accumulation calculation showed an improvement in the calculation by displaying on the graph an accumulated amount of metal equal to the excess metal released the following day. The results also showed that an absence of excess metal during standard production days is displayed on the graph, unlike the results of the old calculation, which falsely displayed accumulated metal.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
