Abstract
A fóti plébániatemplom építészeti szerkezetének, szobrászati és díszítő elemeinek kapcsolataiA 19. század első fele európai és észak-afrikai építészetében az orientalizáló stílust egy iszlám-arabeszk elemeket beépítő keresztény templom kezdi terjeszteni, nevezetesen gibraltári brit kolónia Szentháromság anglikán székesegyháza (1825-1832). 1 További ilyen stílusú épület a korszakban az algíri székesegyház homlokzata 1844ből (Ketchaoua-Moschee), és ennek a templomnak a hatását mutató Szent Ágoston Bazilika (1881-1900) Annabában, Francia-Algériában.Az 1845-1855 között épült fóti templom a magyarországi romantikus historizmus félköríves stílusának (Rundbogenstil) egyik fő alkotása.2 Az alapos és minden részletében átgondolt és kiforrott tervezést és kivitelezést tanúsítja a nyugat-európai románkori székesegyházak részleteiből inspirálódó szerkezet, a külső ornamentális díszek szoros kapcsolata a templomtér és a kripta kifestésével, valamint a geometrikus és növényi ornamentika arab és európai románkori díszítő szobrászatból merítő motívumai.Vajon hatással volt-e a megrendelő Károlyi István a templom stílusára vagy teljesen az építészre bízta a tervezést?A kérdésre biztos válasz nem adható, viszont érdemes áttekinteni ebből a szempontból Károlyi fóti könyvtárának 1843-as leltárát.3 A több mint hatezer tételes leltárban számos útikönyv szerepel.Építészettörténeti szempontból négy fontos tétel keltheti fel a figyelmet: 1.
