Foreldrar standa frammi fyrir mjög flóknum atriðum sem tengjast börnum og unglingum í nútímaþjóðfélagi og uppeldisaðferðir hafa mikið breyst vegna samfélagsþátta. Foreldrar barna og unglinga með geðræn vandamál þurfa því að takast á við mun stærra hlutverk þegar barn þess eða unglingur er að takast á við báða þessa þætti í einu. Allir sjúkdómar og veikindi raska jafnvægi fjölskyldunnar og rjúfa hefðbundin hlutverk hennar og hefur einnig mikil áhrif á systkini þennan tíma sem veikindaferlið gengur yfir. 
\nTilgangur þessarar rannsóknar var að kanna reynslu foreldra barna/unglinga með geðræn vandamál af stuðningi og stuðningsleysi af hálfu heilbrigðisþjónustunnar. Markmið rannsóknar-innar var að auka innsýn heilbrigðisstarfsmanna og annarra á þeirri upplifun og líðan foreldra þann tíma þegar barnið/unglingurinn var að veikjast og hvernig þeir upplifðu þjónustu heilbrigðisþjónustunnar fyrir og eftir greiningu sjúkdómsins.
\nNotast var við fyrirbærafræðilega rannsóknaraðferð og stuðst við Vancouver skólann í fyrirbærafræði. Þátttakendur voru tvennir foreldrar sem áttu barn/ungling með geðræn vandamál. Eitt viðtal var tekið við hvort foreldri, þau ritunnin og greind í þemu og nokkur undirþemu voru síðan greind útfrá þeim. Fyrirbærafræðilegar rannsóknir eru oft notaðar til þess að kanna mannlega reynslu með það að markmiði að bæta heilbrigðisþjónustuna.
\nHelstu niðurstöður sýndu að foreldrum fannst að skortur á skipulagðri þjónustu til stuðnings fjölskyldna barna og unglinga með geðræn vandamál í litlum bæjarfélögum, hafi aukið álagið á fjölskylduna. Þeir upplifðu að stuðningurinn hafi verið stopull og lítill vegna þess að engin markmið voru til um þjónustuna sem veitt var. Þeim fannst stuðningleysið aðallega fólgið í því hlutleysi stjórnenda heilbrigðisþjónustunnar að vinna ekki að lausnum til meðferðaúrræða. Þeim fannst því mikill munur á þjónustu barna/unglinga með geðsjúkdóma miðað við aðra sjúkdóma.
