I perioden 1996-2000 har det vært gjennomført systematiske undersøkelser av vannkvalitet, avrenningsvolumer og forurensningstransport ved de viktigste forurensningskilder i Nordgruvefeltet ved Røros. Området drenerer til Orva som løper inn i Glåma ved Orvos. Forurensningstilførslene til Orva har sin årsak i avrenning fra tre hovedkilder: Gruvevann fra Kongens gruve, tilførsler fra Orvsjøen som igjen mottar forurenset drensvann fra hovedsaklig Sextus gruve, samt diffuse tilførsler fra gruveavfall omkring oppredningsverket ved Kongens gruve. I de to siste år er det påvist en tydelig økt tilførsel fra de diffuse kilder i området. Tungmetalltransporten i Orva har av den grunn økt noe. Da situasjonen vurderes som ustabil, anbefales det fortsatt å ha tilsyn med situasjonen. Dersom det blir aktuelt med ytterligere tiltak i Nordgruvefeltet, bør disse også omfatte avrenning fra de diffuse kilder.
