Constitueix el nucli d'aquest volum la tesi doctoral de l'autora, dedicada a la venda al detall a la ciutat de Roma, i que va desenvolupar entre 2001 i 2005. El tema ha estat treballat amb anterioritat a les ja clàssiques obres de L. Friedländer (1862-1871), J. Carcopino (1939) o U.E. Paoli (1942). Totes aquestes obres van tractar, d'una manera o una altra, la qüestió de la distribució i la topografia comercial de Roma, però en cap no s'analitza el petit comerç d'una manera tan global com la proposada per Claire Holleran.
