L’analyse des données bathymétriques à haute résolution et des profils acoustiques de sous-surface, obtenus lors de campagnes de terrain aux étés 2014 et 2016 au réservoir Manicouagan, a permis l’identification de plusieurs formes et processus sédimentaires sur les pentes et le plancher lacustre de l’ancien lac Manicouagan. L’analyse géomorphologique qui en découle a pour objectif de mieux comprendre l’évolution de la dynamique sédimentaire du bassin depuis la déglaciation. Avec une profondeur maximale de 322 m, il s’agissait du lac le plus profond connu à ce jour à l’est des Grands Lacs, avant l’ennoiement par le réservoir Manicouagan, dont la profondeur maximale se chiffre maintenant à 452 m. Le lac Manicouagan se divise en trois secteurs : Un secteur nord, au plancher très plat et aux pentes abruptes incisées de chenaux. Un secteur central, où se trouvent les bassins les plus profonds. Un secteur sud, au plancher lacustre chaotique et aux pentes plus douces, hôtes d’importants systèmes de ravins. Avant l’ennoiement, les apports sédimentaires vers le plancher lacustre étaient dominés par l’apport fluviatile des principaux affluents, à travers leurs deltas, de même que par les courants gravitaires à l’origine des ravins et chenaux. La mise en eau du réservoir a entrainé une augmentation de l’importance des mouvements de masse dans l’apport sédimentaire vers les bassins profonds, tout en éliminant l’apport des affluents, dont les sédiments se déposent désormais sur les plateaux et sur les rives du réservoir Manicouagan.
