Abstract
Trails ring 2 ponds (stormwater management pond supplying the main pond ) comprising 1.7 hectares between an industrial area and the Grand River at Kitchener’s Stanley Park Optimist Natural Area . They filter run-off storm water for slow release in to the Grand, providing a riparian habit. Signage at the Pollock Family Trailway trailhead states: “With the assistance of the Optimist Club of Stanley Park, this natural area is being developed by the City of Kitchener to restore the environment, plants and animals that existed along the Grand River over 200 years ago. The ponds were designed as fish breeding areas to help improve the Grand River fishery. Groundwater and runoff feed the ponds, which act as natural water filters. A large culvert connects the main pond to the Grand River, allowing fish to move in and out of the pond system. Fish species found in the ponds include common shiners, pumpkinseed, rock bass, green sunfish, brook stickleback, largemouth bass, black crappie and bluegill. Other wildlife that have been observed here are frogs, toads, crayfish, turtles, great blue herons, raccoons and muskrats. With your help, these and other native plant and animal species will thrive again. Please take care of this natural area so that you can enjoy it for many years to come.” The trailhead for the J. A. Pollock Family Trailway, part of the 42 km Walter Bean Grand River Trail (Cambridge to Waterloo) , is located near the Natural Area’s Shirley Drive parking lot. Side t rail s lead to the Grand River with downstream views to the Breslau Bridge (Victoria Street / Ontario Highway 7) The 1972 Breslau Bridge is a reinforced concrete structure with a length of 138 metres (454 ft) over five 28 m (92 ft) spans. Initially comprising two lanes, it was later widened to four lanes. German-Pennsylvanian pioneers Jacob Kolb and his wife Katherine Clemens settled on a 66 hectare ( 162 ac ) site at the Breslau ford (today’s Kolb Park) in 1829. This site became a sand & gravel pit from 1983 to 1989. The pits, together w ith the Stanley Park Optimist Natural Area on Victoria Street’s north side, were subsequently re-naturalized by the GRCA to improve surface water quality before flowing into the Grand River. The four ponds and related trails have become popular with walkers and anglers.
