Abstract
In a bid to deepen the analysis of the relationship between the process of capitalist modernization and the production of the state at a provincial scale, this article takes up an issue widely worked on by national and regional historical literature, but which has been little explored in SDE: the use of labor coercion during the process of capitalist modernization that took place in the last quarter of the 19th century. Based on the systematic study of the historiographic bibliography, the analysis of documentary, normative and journalistic sources, this article aims to address the conchabo as a practice of statehood that accompanied the process of formation of the Santiago state. In a province with an abundant rural population, labor coercion seemed aimed at restricting the mobility of a workforce that already at that time showed a long tradition of seasonal migration, seeking to secure, at low cost, the arms required for the “explosive” sugar project. which was attempted to be implemented in the province in the 1880s.
