Abstract
Grace Knight was born in Toronto, Canada. Her future father-in-law, an ice cream salesman in Harford County, met her at a convention in Canada and thought she would be a "good match" for his son. After a pen-pal courtship, the couple eloped and set up house in Harford County, getting married in Pennsylvania on the way here. Just shy of her 94th birthday, she recalls her years in Carsin's Run running a general store and working at Aberdeen Proving Ground. Mrs. Knight recalls that butter and bacon were the two items most precious during WWII rationing. Prior to U.S. 40 being built, MD 22 (Churchville Road) was a major east-west route through the county. Today's Rt. 22 path straightened the road to correct a dangerous corner where Snake Lane and Churchville Road previously intersected. Her children attended Jefferson 2-room school, which was later replaced by Churchville Elementary.
