Abstract
L'urbanisme, entre dessein et dessin L'expression anglaise « urban design » est parfois utilisée telle quelle en français faute d'équivalent satisfaisant pour rendre compte en un seul terme à la fois du « dessein » (la conception d'une solution répondant à un objectif) et du « dessin » (la formalisation, souvent graphique, de cette solution). Des termes proches sont souvent utilisés, « composition urbaine », « art urbain », « projet urbain », sans être de véritables synonymes. Les Québécois utilisent l'expression « design urbain ». L'urban design est une approche de la conception de la ville fortement sous-tendue par la critique des destructions massives des tissus urbains centraux, dans les décennies 1950 et 1960, notamment réalisées pour le passage de vastes infrastructures routières dédiées aux seuls flux automobiles. En réaction, l'urban design a contribué à rétablir la richesse de contenu social et morphologique des espaces publics des quartiers centraux alors menacés (Jacobs, Appleyard 1987).
