La solidarietà europea per l’insurrezione greca del 1821 è solo una delle modalità del discorso filellenico, che (per l’epoca moderna) nasce con il neoclassicismo di Winckelmann e continua a operare attraverso i secoli – fino a oggi, nell’interesse per la Grecia della crisi economica, un paese percepito come ‘esotico’ per la sua resistenza al capitalismo globalizzato e al neoliberalismo aggressivo. Ciò che unisce le diverse forme di filellenismo nei testi di letteratura tedesca qui analizzati (dalla lirica epigonale dell’Ottocento di argomento greco alla poesia sull’Acropoli di Grünbein, dalla descrizione di Atene nella prima delle lezioni con cui Wolf introduce il racconto Kassandra alla poesia in cui Grass accusa la UE per la politica di austerity imposta alla Grecia) è l’idealizzazione della Grecia, il cui corollario è la negazione della Grecia reale, ritenuta deludente rispetto alla Grecia antica e a quella pre-moderna, che invece incarnano il paradigma del classicismo o quello dell’‘autenticità’.
