Abstract
Ce mémoire de maîtrise porte sur l'étude de l'abolition de la peine capitale au Canada. Il se penche sur l'analyse du discours politique et de l'opinion publique lors des débats de 1966-1967, 1973 et 1976. Le premier chapitre du mémoire traite de l'humanisation du système judiciaire qui s'effectue au Canada et dans plusieurs autres pays occidentaux après la Deuxième Guerre mondiale. Par la suite, l'étude des partis politiques, du vote des députés et des sondages dans le deuxième chapitre démontre clairement la position de chaque parti politique sur la peine capitale ainsi qu'une importante dichotomie entre l'opinion des députés et celle de la population. Enfin, les chapitres trois et quatre portent sur l'analyse du discours des députés et l'influence des groupes de pression. Le troisième chapitre permet l'identification de trois thématiques alors que le dernier illustre les moyens utilisés par les groupes de pression pour influencer les députés.
