Abstract
Le discours de Laurier de 1877 (voir texte 34) et son arrivée au pouvoir ne mettent pourtant pas un terme au libéralisme radical, « à la française » dont il s’était distancié en lui opposant un libéralisme réformiste « à l’anglaise ». Entre 1890 et 1914, le libéralisme radical à teneur anticléricale s’affirme à nouveau dans des pratiques et des combats nouveaux (bibliothèque publique et déconfessionnalisation de l’école à Montréal, fin de l’immunité fiscale pour les communautés religieuses) mais aussi sur des modes connus comme la condamnation épiscopale d’un journal. Outre Louis Fréchette (Satires et polémiques ou l’École cléricale au Canada, Montréal, Presses de l’Université de Montréal, « Bibliothèque du Nouveau Monde », 2 vol., 1993), Godfroy Langlois est alors une figure exemplaire de ce libéralisme radical.
