Abstract

-- \nABSTRACT : The Government of Canada believes that bilingualism is an asset for its country's future, and it acts to encourage this in its citizens (Privy Council Office of Canada, 2003). It promotes using the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR; which advocates an action-oriented approach) to support teaching and learning French as a second language (FSL; Canadian Heritage, 2006). The Ontario Ministry of Education therefore supports the action-oriented approach as a pedagogical method used in FSL programs, and globally, encourages FSL teachers to use the CEFR to inform their teaching practices (Ontario Ministry of Education, 2013). However, previous research shows that teachers have difficulty imagining the use of the framework in classrooms, for example, as they perceive it to be complex (Mison and Jang, 2011). Therefore, the research question of this study is: what are the conceptions about teaching and learning and the teaching practices derived from the CEFR of FSL teachers in Ontario? To respond to this question, this research has three objectives: 1) identify FSL teachers' conceptions about teaching and learning relative to the CEFR; 2) describe these teachers' teaching practices based on the CEFR; and 3) explicit the links between their conceptions and their practices. This research is based on a qualitative methodology. Virtual, semi-directed interviews were held with eight FSL teachers who teach in Ontario (elementary and secondary; from the core, extended and immersion FSL programs). The results suggest that teachers believe the CEFR provides a clear understanding of the definition of FSL and its sequence of instruction and that it promotes student-centered teaching practices. They also propose that teachers conduct teaching practices based on the CEFR that support students' development authentic FSL skills. Finally, they indicate that there are links between the teachers' conceptions (system of beliefs) and practices, for example, between their personal beliefs and their actions. This study concludes that it would be pertinent to continue to invest in professional development related to the CEFR, especially concerning the lesser known or used parts of the framework. -- Mot(s) clé(s) en anglais : Common European Framework of Reference, conceptions about teaching and learning, teaching practices, teaching French as a second language.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
