La Brigata Reggio affonda le sue radici nel Risorgimento: è infatti la diretta emanazione del Battaglione Volontari Modenesi costituito nella città emiliana nel 1859 e composto da volontari locali e veneti. Dal gennaio 1860 viene inglobata nel Regio Esercito, in previsione dell’annessione dei territori emiliani al regno sabaudo, poi Regno d’Italia. Nel Novecento il 45° reggimento trova sede a Cagliari e il 46° a Sassari città che lasciano per essere schierati sul campo di battaglia. La Brigata durante il primo conflitto mondiale è schierata sul fronte dolomitico e si distingue nell’offensiva del Monte Sief (1916), nella difesa dall’attacco austro-ungarico nella Val Maè (1917) e nelle conclusive battaglie del Piave (1918).
