Deanna Bowen Joana JoachimLe Mille carré doré, à Montréal, tout comme le Vieux-Port, est un lieu peuplé d'histoires multiples.En arpentant les rues de ces quartiers, l'on ressent une impression d'inquiétante étrangeté au contact des spectres du passé.L'héritage anti-noir et colonialiste s'immisce dans les brèches de ces lieux historiques, provoquant un malaise chez plusieurs.La pratique artistique de Deanna Bowen met au jour cette histoire canadienne troublante en sondant lesdites brèches, et reconstitue, à l'aide d'archives publiques comme privées, une « cartographie complexe du pouvoir 1 ».La démarche de Bowen consiste à repérer dans les archives la présence et les déplacements des personnes noires dans le temps et dans l'espace 2 .Son propre récit familial est au cœur de sa pratique interdisciplinaire et autoethnographique.Elle examine sa lignée, les migrations de ses ancêtres et leurs liens avec le quartier Hogan's Alley de Vancouver ; la communauté noire de Strathcona ; les personnes noires ayant pris part aux premières vagues de colonisation en Alberta et en Saskatchewan ; les Creek Negroes ; les villes « entièrement noires » de l'Oklahoma ; l'exode des Exodusters de Kansas ; et le Ku Klux Klan au Canada et aux États-Unis 3 .L'approche itérative et cumulative de l'artiste lui permet d'explorer les théma-Pour un commentaire sur les œuvres et les enjeux soulevés par l'exposition ainsi que des lectures suggérées, veuillez consulter Pistes de réflexion sur le site Web de la galerie.
