Abstract
Chef-d'œuvre de la cartographie portugaise du début du XVI e siècle, l'atlas Miller représente le monde connu des Européens juste avant l'expédition de Magellan (1519-1522). L'atlas s'appuie sur une documentation très à jour concernant les dernières conquêtes portugaises en Asie et les découvertes espagnoles en Amérique du Sud : si l'on dénombre les pavillons aux couleurs des puissances européennes, l'influence portugaise semble prédominante. L'océan Indien est dessiné à partir des informations recueillies après les expéditions de Vasco de Gama en Inde (1498) et les actions militaires d'Afonso de Albuquerque, qui établit les fondations de l'empire portugais d'Orient, de la mer Rouge au détroit de Malacca, en Asie du Sud-Est. La carte du Brésil rend compte des explorations entreprises par Pedro Álvares Cabral en 1500. Sur la carte de l'Atlantique, les archipels de la mer des Caraïbes sont déjà très bien situés ; la Floride espagnole (découverte en 1513) et Terre-Neuve, reconnue par Jean Cabot dès 1497, sont représentées sous la forme de tableaux paysagers, peuplés d'ours et de cervidés dans des forêts et des montagnes sauvages.
