Ce travail analyse la figure du travesti dans le théâtre de Michel Tremblay, un écrivain qui a bouleversé le panorama théâtral québécois des années 60. Il s’agit du premier auteur à introduire le joual dans ses œuvres, une forme populaire de la langue française du Québec. Il a contribué ainsi à donner une place au joual dans la littérature québécoise et cette langue est devenue une arme pour revendiquer une identité autonome. À l’époque, la province du Québec se trouvait au milieu d’une révolution sociale et le débat nationaliste pour l’indépendance était en pleine effervescence. L’œuvre de Tremblay est très liée à ce contexte particulier. Avec le but de situer les pièces que le travail va analyser, la première partie est donc dédiée à l’évolution du théâtre québécois, sa thématique, ses innovations dramaturgiques et à l’importance du joual dans le monde du théâtre. La seconde partie s’occupe du sujet principal de ce travail : les travestis. Dû à l’ampleur de l’œuvre de Tremblay, ce travail s’occupe strictement de l’analyse du travestisme dans les premières pièces de l’auteur, qui se regroupent dans un ensemble théâtral que lui-même a nommé comme le Cycle des Belles-Sœurs. Dans l’œuvre de Tremblay, aussi bien romanesque que théâtrale. Les différents personnages « travestis » remplissent presque toujours un rôle protagoniste, ce qui devient un sujet d’exception à l’époque. Ceci est sans doute un trait caractéristique des pièces de Tremblay. Pour tirer des conclusions sur le sujet, le travail révise d’abord la biographie et la trajectoire artistique du dramaturge, pour passer ensuite à la thématique principale du Cycle des Belles-Sœurs et arriver finalement au sujet des travestis. Il s’agit d’hommes (souvent homosexuels) qui se déguisent en femme. Ce sont des personnages avec une identité compliquée, plurielle, comme la société québécoise, qui elle aussi était à la recherche d’une identité propre.
