Un nombre grandissant d’auteurs conçoit l’art comme un outil de santé publique (Clift & Camic, 2016; Fancourt, 2017; Gallant et al., 2019; Rugg et al., 2021), en raison de son potentiel à sensibiliser et éduquer la population (Nabulime & McEwan, 2011; Sukhanova, 2013), à favoriser les échanges (Mohatt et al., 2013), ainsi qu’à apaiser la détresse (p. ex., MacDonald et al., 2003) et augmenter la qualité de vie (Tymoszuk, Perkins, Spiro et al., 2019), attribuant ainsi un rôle social important à la population des artistes. Parmi celle-ci, certains artistes semblent présenter une capacité particulière à toucher leur public, tendant ainsi vers une créativité décrite comme éminente (Csikszentmihalyi, 1996). Des travaux des dernières décennies cherchant à comprendre le lien entre différentes activités mentales et ce type de créativité mettent en lumière l’impact de différentes dimensions des émotions sur la performance créative (p. ex., Baas et al., 2008). À ce jour, la recherche en psychologie ne semble toutefois pas avoir permis de s’enquérir du point de vue des artistes eux-mêmes concernant l’importance de leur expérience émotionnelle à travers le processus créatif artistique d’œuvres marquantes pour leur public. L’objectif de la présente étude, réalisée à partir d’un devis qualitatif, est d’approfondir les connaissances à cet égard. Des entrevues semi-structurées ont été réalisées auprès de dix artistes québécois de domaines artistiques variés percevant, en s’appuyant sur des indicateurs objectifs (p. ex., témoignages, mentions, prix), avoir eu un impact social particulier à travers l’une ou certaines de leurs œuvres et accordant une importance aux émotions dans leur processus créatif. L’analyse par catégories conceptualisantes a permis de relever treize fonctions des émotions dans le processus créatif d’œuvres marquantes pour le public, en lien avec le rapport à soi dans la création, le rapport à l’œuvre et le rapport au public. L’étude met en lumière l’importance de favoriser, pour les artistes, des conditions de création favorables à l’actualisation des différentes fonctions de leurs émotions dans leur processus créatif, cela au service d’une contribution au bien-être collectif et individuel, dans une perspective de santé publique. Les résultats obtenus pourraient contribuer également à sensibiliser les milieux artistiques, scientifiques et cliniques à la possible portée sociale des artistes, ainsi qu’à leurs besoins particuliers de soutien en lien avec certaines zones de vulnérabilité potentielles dans leur travail.
