Véritable renversement du rapport de force entre la ville et la campagne, l'urbanisation conduit, comme on le sait, à la concentration progressive des populations de même que des activités productives, commerciales et culturelles dans les villes. La recherche a montré que ce processus historique, qui s'accélère au XXe siècle, parce que stimulé par l'industrialisation massive, a largement contribué à façonner tant l'espace québécois que le milieu de vie de ses habitants. Organisées en des réseaux et des hiérarchies fondés sur la taille des effectifs, les fonctions exercées, de même que sur leur ancrage territorial, les villes du Québec forment un ensemble cohérent et diversifié. Sur un second plan, tout en affichant ses appartenances nord-américaines, le milieu urbain québécois présente des visages particuliers qui offrent aux citadins un cadre fortement différencié selon la taille et la vocation de la ville habitée aussi bien que du quartier ou du secteur fréquenté.Cette nouvelle publication de la collection Cheminements du CIEQ fait suite à la tenue, le 26 mai 2000, d'un atelier scientifique organisé par Claude Bellavance et Marc St-Hilaire, atelier auquel participaient une douzaine de jeunes chercheurs de divers horizons, spécialistes des études urbaines. L'objectif principal des organisateurs de la rencontre était d'amorcer la réflexion sur l'expérience de la recherche en études urbaines au Québec, en mettant l'accent sur les approches retenues et les matériaux privilégiés.
