In de roerige jaren 60 van de vorige eeuw begonnen filmmakers in veel landen zich af te zetten tegen de gevestigde orde binnen de filmindustrie. Dit vertaalde zich in nieuwe filmstromingen zoals het Franse Nouvelle Vague. In Nederland lijkt zich ook een Nieuwe Stroom te ontwikkelen die vooral is gebaseerd op een vernieuwing van de Nederlandse filmproductie. Beide filmstromen baseerden zich op een vergelijkbare ideologie en aanhang van nieuwe technieken, maar met een andere doelstelling. Waar hun Franse tijdgenoten zich vooral bezighielden met het leveren van kritiek op films van de voorgaande generatie, maakte de Nederlandse Nieuwe Golf zich vooral zorgen over de staat van het Nederlandse filmbedrijf. Hun visie dat er toch vooral geproduceerd moest gaan worden, leidde tot een zoektocht naar het Nederlandse publiek.
