Abstract
Work is an important factor of the health of populations, a factor of "good" health when it contributes to good general living conditions. On the other hand, it can lead to temporary or permanent damage, or even the death of workers because of the risks to which they are likely to be exposed. However, it can be difficult to prove that work is responsible for this type of damage. The occupational origin of illnesses, which are often multifactorial, is therefore particularly complex to establish. Between personal or environmental risk factors and occupational risk factors, it is scientifically impossible to determine a single, and determining cause. Although special compensation schemes have been set up to overcome this difficulty and still enable them to be covered, occupational diseases remain poorly identified, under-reported and under-recognised overall. This thesis examines causality assessment practices in the application of these schemes in France and Quebec. Based on the processing of cancer claims, it examines the influence of medical opinion and scientific evidence in the decision-making process.
