Abstract
Introduction : Maintaining optimal health is greatly influenced by nutrition, especially for \nnursing students pursuing challenging academic trainings. Adopting healthy eating habits and \nhaving a solid understanding of nutrition are crucial since they impact physical and cognitive \nwell-being as well as academic performance. Little study has been conducted on undergraduate \nnursing students' nutritional knowledge and dietary habits, especially in Universiti Malaysia \nSarawak (UNIMAS). Objectives: This study aims to evaluate the nutritional knowledge and \ndietary habits of UNIMAS undergraduate nursing students and explore potential correlation \nbetween knowledge and dietary practices. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was \nconducted among 164 undergraduate nursing students using a simple random sampling \nmethod. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire comprising of 30 items assessing \nnutritional knowledge and 14 items on dietary habits. Data analysis was performed using SPSS \nversion 27.0. Results: The findings revealed only less than half (42.7%) of the participants \nhave good nutritional knowledge and only a quarter (36.6%) of the participants have good \ndietary habit. There is no significant correlation between level of nutritional knowledge and \ndietary habits among undergraduate nursing students as determined by the Spearman \ncorrelation test. Conclusion: The findings of this study may help educational institutions and \nhealthcare programs modify their curriculum to better meet the nutritional demands of future \nprofessionals while also advancing understanding of the dietary habits of healthcare students. \nFuture healthcare professionals' general health and wellbeing can be enhanced by filling in \nnutritional knowledge gaps and encouraging healthy eating habits.
