O presente estudo se propõe fazer valer que a verdadeira contribuição de Ricoeur à causa hermenêutica se apresenta diversas figuras de uma única. Ao modo de uma reconstrução, examinaremos algumas figuras que caracterizam de modo exemplar esta abordagem. A guisa de introdução do assunto, buscaremos primeiro, do lado dos mestres do Ricoeur, Gabriel Marcel e Karl Jaspers, as fontes possíveis de uma via longa na sua respectiva filosofia. Examinaremos em seguida quatro figuras que constituem meditações hermenêuticas: o desvio da consciência pelos saberes históricos, o padrão hermenêutico, a inserção do problema hermenêutico na fenomenologia e a dialética entre explicar e compreender. No fim do percurso, notaremos que a via longa da compreensão recobre diversas acepções, bem como se estende a todo projeto filosófico de Ricoeur.
