Abstract
On 10 December 1119, in the Guidonis comitis room, or in the palace of Pistoia of the Guidi counts (imperial representatives), Imilia comitissa, wife of Guido Guerra (perhaps adopted son of the countess Matilde), in the name of her consort, granted the parish priest Rolando, custos et prepositus Plebis S. Andreae de Inpori, and to all the homines of the plebate: a. the right to build their houses around the parish church of Sant’Andrea; b. being able to surround houses with defensive walls. The parish thus strengthened its role of territorial reference; around it a permanent settlement originated in an area that was already the site of a market and a river port on the Arno. The resolution allowed for the fortification of the Romanesque baptismal risen centuries earlier and the fortification of numerous peoples who resided in small approximately fortified nuclei and in open villages, which arose in the vast area that went from the confluence of the Pesa to that of the Elsa in the Arno, ensuring them greater protection. \nIl 10 dicembre 1119, in camera Guidonis comitis, ovvero nel palazzo di Pistoia dei conti Guidi (rappresentanti imperiali), Imilia comitissa, moglie di Guido Guerra (forse figlio adottivo della contessa Matilde), a nome del consorte, concedeva al pievano Rolando, custos et prepositus Plebis S. Andreae de Inpori e a tutti gli homines del plebato il diritto di edificare le loro case intorno alla pieve di Sant’Andrea e di poterle circondare con mura difensive. La pieve rafforzava così il suo ruolo di riferimento territoriale, e intorno a essa ebbe origine un abitato stabile in una zona che era già sede di mercato e di un porto fluviale sull’Arno. La deliberazione consentì la fortificazione della battesimale romanica sorta secoli prima e l’incastellamento di numerosi popoli che risiedevano in piccoli nuclei approssimativamente fortificati e in villaggi aperti, sorti nella vasta area che andava dalla confluenza della Pesa a quella dell’Elsa nell’Arno, assicurando loro una maggiore protezione.
