Abstract
Two centuries ago, Marrakech appeared to be a heap of scattered ruins and empty land, some of which was cultivated. In any case, this is the image that Ali bey chose to represent the city in which he stayed in 1804. Two towers dominate the landscape that he had drawn ten years later in Paris to illustrate the account of his travels. One is easily recognisable, the minaret of the Kutubiyya Mosque, the other has remained mysterious. If this tower did exist, Ali Bey’s engraving shows it partially ruined. A century later, it had disappeared. Was it a bastion of the qar al-ajar or the minaret of the first Almohad mosque? Perhaps both answers are correct, as the first tower may have served as the base for the second? "is is what this paper aims to clarify, by gathering and comparing the available historical and iconographic material, and then by proposing an architectural critique of the building on the basis of the records of the excavations carried out on the site. Based on these different elements, this paper will finally present, in the form of a graphic hypothesis, a history of the evolution of this tower in the centre of a quarter where some of the most emblematic buildings of Marrakesh were built.
