Abstract
This project aims to provide a unique perspective into the mind of the man behind the Northwest Rebellion of 1885, Métis politician and resistance leader, Louis Riel. Taking place in 1884 before its active course the following year, we focus on Riel’s second rebellion as described within a letter written to a friend by Riel himself during his time in prison leading up to his trial, and eventual execution in November six months later. Our project, as presented through “StoryMapJS”, the online storytelling platform provided by Northwestern University’s knightlab.com, charts out the story of Riel’s last few years using relevant geographic, and time-related data derived directly from his own hand. The map will walk through key moments of the rebellion, presenting each event as they were described within Riel’s letter, along with accompanying supplementary sources and imagery to better depict his story.
