Le nombre de fermes laitières a sensiblement diminué au Québec au cours des dernières années, et cette tendance continue de se maintenir. Ce mémoire a pour objectif de développer des indicateurs technico-économiques de la durabilité des entreprises laitières québécoises. L'évaluation de la durabilité est réalisée à partir d'indicateurs choisis par un groupe d'experts, producteurs et conseillers, spécialisés dans les domaines technique, économique et financier de l'industrie laitière. Ces experts ont aussi associé les indicateurs retenus à des seuils permettant de situer chaque ferme sur une échelle de durabilité. Au total, huit indicateurs technico-économiques regroupés en cinq composantes, ont été retenus pour évaluer la durabilité des fermes laitières. Les huit indicateurs retenus et notés sur une échelle de 100 points sont la production par vache (8 points), le lait fourrager (12 points), la marge de sécurité (15 points), l'endettement par hectolitre de lait vendu (10 points), le pourcentage de charges (20 points), la charge de machinerie par hectolitre de lait vendu ( 10 points), le lait produit par unité de travail personne (15 points) et l'autosuffisance en fourrage (10 points). Quarante entreprises laitières localisées dans deux régions du Québec ont participé à la validation de la méthode d'évaluation de la durabilité. Cette validation a permis de préciser et d'améliorer l'évaluation des indicateurs retenus.
