Les activités humaines génèrent une quantité de plus en plus importante de déchets solides et liquides. Or, vu la dégradation générale de la qualité des cours d'eau à laquelle nous faisons face, il est essentiel de traiter les effluents contaminés avant de les rejeter dans l'environnement. Les rejets auxquels nous nous sommes particulièrement intéressés sont les eaux usées d'origine domestique. Au cours de cette étude, nous avons donc testé l'efficacité des marais filtrants afin, le cas échéant, de démontrer que l'utilisation de marais filtrants peut représenter une alternative intéressante pour le traitement secondaire des eaux usées d'une petite municipalité. Pour ce faire, deux marais à écoulement de surface ont été construits sur le site de la station de traitement des boues de fosses septiques de la municipalité du Canton d'Eaton, au Québec.
