The nature and ecology of Personally Significant Learning Experiences

Abstract
This paper reports the results of a preliminary examination of Personally Significant Learning Experiences (PSLEs) of first and second year graduate students in Landscape Architecture at the University of Guelph. The results of this exploratory study indicate that PSLEs are necessarily subjective, of value to the individual, and show differences as to content, location, timing and duration. Despite these differences, the subjects showed significant consistency in their emotional states during their PSLEs and self-reflection was found to play a significant role in a subject's ability to discern a PSLE from other life course experiences. Implications for use in Landscape Architecture curricula as well as any formal learning environments are enormous. With this better understanding of PSLEs, both teachers and learners are better able to understand one another, and learners themselves will be better equipped to create their own learning environment.
