Abstract
Since 1996, local municipal governments in Ontario have been undergoing a process of municipal restructuring. During this process, municipal staff and residents alike stated a concern over the potential loss of community and community identity. This thesis is an investigation of the approaches that municipal governments of amalgamated municipalities are undertaking in addressing the issue of community vitality. The research focused on three case studies, The Township of Centre Wellington, Loyalist Township, and the County of Brant. Through the research it was found that municipal governments in all three cases are supporting a community vision that seeks to maintain the existing communities while developing or building a broader sense of community for the amalgamated municipality. The approaches employed in the three cases differ somewhat, but there are a number of similarities between them.
