Suomenoppijoiden ääntämistä ei ole tutkittu vielä tarkasti. Esittelen työssäni kielenoppimisen osa-alueita, jotka koskevat ääntämistä erityisesti diftongien ja pitkien vokaalien osalta. Foneettinen tietoisuus kielestä on avuksi sekä opettajalle että oppijalle. \n \nInformantteina on 24 suomen alkeiskurssin opiskelijaa: kuusi Ranskasta ja Saksasta, viisi Italiasta ja neljä Espanjasta ja Unkarista. Tutkimuksen aineistona on viisi sanasanelua kolmen viikon alkeiskurssilta ja nauhoitus kurssin lopusta. Tarkastelen oppijoiden tuotoksia sekä kirjallisesta että nauhoitetusta aineistosta. Tutkimuskohteenani on kielenpiirteet, jotka on todettu haasteellisiksi vieraskielisille suomenoppijoille jo aiemmissa tutkimuksissa. Havainnoin erikielisten oppijoiden tuloksia ja vertailen eri äidinkieltä puhuvien tuotoksia toisiinsa. \n \nTavoitteenani oli selvittää, mitkä diftongit ja pitkät vokaalit ovat informanteille vaikeimpia ja millaisia variantteja informantit äänteistä tuottavat. Vaikeimmiksi vokaaleiksi osoittautuivat suomen omaperäiset ä ja ö sekä sellaiset diftongit tai pitkät vokaalit, jotka sisältävät kyseisiä äänteitä. Eri äidinkielisten oppijoiden tuottamat äänteiden variantit vaihtelevat.
